Jelle van der Hilst, 6th year graduate student

6th year graduate student
Voigt and Belcher Labs, BE, Synthetic Biology Center

Jelle joined the Voigt lab in 2019 and is coadvised by Angela Belcher. His project focuses on the engineering of squid lens proteins into biomimetic optical materials. The fascinating properties of these lenses include a robustness to spherical aberrations, which lower image quality in conventional lenses. Jelle grew up in Massachusetts, where he fell in love with the fall leaves and winter blizzards; he then moved to London to pursue a BSc in Biochemistry and a Masters in Systems and Synthetic Biology at Imperial College London, where the seasons are ‘rain’ and ‘not-rain’. He enjoys exploring communication areas such as graphic design and teaching, and is always looking for new tricks and styles to share. In his free time, he enjoys gardening, baking, hiking, and exploring the local beaches in the summertime heat waves.
