We\u2019ll support your communication work by having conversations with you about high-level principles like audience, structure, and message, rather than focusing on line-editing or grammar. We are\u00a0particularly strong at brainstorming and outlining, and encourage you to include the lab in your process as early as you can\u00a0so that you\u00a0get the most out of the experience.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"padding-left: 30px\">Option 1: <a href=\"https:\/\/mit.mywconline.net\/\">Use our online scheduling system<\/a><\/h3>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">The first time you use the system linked above, you will need to register. You will then be able to see all of the Fellows\u2019 available times and pick one that will work best for you.<br \/>\nAppointments must be made 24 hours in advance.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong>Option 2: <a href=\"mailto:be-commlab@mit.edu\">Contact the BE Communication Lab Manager<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">If none of the Fellows\u2019 times work for you, or you want guidance figuring out which Fellow would be a good match, contact us. Let us know what you\u2019re working on and when it\u2019s due. We\u2019ll help you get the coaching you need to meet your deadline.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong>Option 3: Contact a Fellow directly<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><a title=\"Meet the Fellows\" href=\"http:\/\/mitcommlab.mit.edu\/be\/meet-our-fellows-staff\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Check out Fellow bios<\/a>\u00a0to see if there is a particular Fellow whose background may be a good match for you.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000\">Communication Lab Policies<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><em>Who can use the Biological Engineering Communication Lab? <\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Biological Engineering Communication Lab\u2019s services are free and available to anyone who is in the Biological Engineering Department, affiliated with a Department lab, or taking a Department class. If you are not sure whether you are eligible, please contact the <a href=\"mailto:be-commlab@mit.edu\">Communication Lab Manager<\/a> to inquire.<\/li>\n<li>If you are not in Biological Engineering, check whether your Course has a Communication Lab available <a href=\"http:\/\/mitcommlab.mit.edu\/find-comm-labs\/\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>How do Communication Lab sessions work?<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>When a client uses the Comm Lab, neither the content discussed nor the fact that the appointment took place is shared beyond the Comm Lab (except as required to give credit within a class).<\/li>\n<li>Sessions can be no longer than 60 minutes.<\/li>\n<li>All coaching sessions must take place in public locations such as the Communication Lab, a caf\u00e9, or the library.<\/li>\n<li>Cancellations must be made at least 3 hours in advance (preferably 24 hours in advance, to respect Fellows&#8217; time). Otherwise, they will be counted as missed appointments.<\/li>\n<li>If a client misses three appointments, they will not be able to take advantage of the Communication Lab during the following four months.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>What can and can\u2019t I expect Communication Fellows to do?<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fellows will have conversations with clients about their work. Fellows may use video chat, phone, or other media options to have such conversations.<\/li>\n<li>Fellows do not provide written feedback.<\/li>\n<li>Fellows are not obligated to read client documents or otherwise prepare before sessions. If you plan to work on a longer document in one session, think in advance about which specific sections or elements would be most helpful for you to focus on during your session.<\/li>\n<li>Fellows are not available for private hiring or contract work, and will not accept gifts from clients.<\/li>\n<li>Fellows do not replace TAs, course instructors, or S<sup>3<\/sup> counselors.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Accessibility\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If you would like to discuss any disability accommodations prior to making a Communication Lab appointment, please contact the <a href=\"mailto:be-commlab@mit.edu\">Communication Lab manager<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Additional communication consultation resources at MIT<\/h3>\n<p>The\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cmsw.mit.edu\/writing-and-communication-center\/\">MIT Writing and Communication Center<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0also offers one-on-one communication consultation on written and oral communication, provided by MIT lecturers who are published writers and experienced teachers.
