Erin Sturd, Communication Fellow

Communication Fellow
3rd year graduate student, Smith Lab

Erin is an NSF fellow and a Ph.D. student in Chemical Engineering advised by Zachary Smith. Erin is from Kansas and graduated from the University of Kansas in 2022 with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering. As an undergraduate researcher under Mark Shiflett, Erin studied refrigerant separations using polymeric membrane materials. At MIT, Erin studies thin film transport phenomena of fluorinated microporous membranes to understand the role of fluorine in aging and plasticization resistance. Erin has a passion for helping others gain confidence by improving their scientific communication and weaving their personal voice into their writing. She wants her clients to find the boldness to inhabit seemingly unwelcome spaces without diminishing their perspective. As a Comm Lab fellow, Erin is excited to continue this mission of increasing presentation confidence and communicating science effectively to those outside of the scientific community. In her free time, Erin enjoys running, lifting weights, reading, creative writing, fashion, and taking care of her plants.
