This free resource is available to anyone affiliated with the MIT Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) or an MIT EECS lab.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mitcommlab.mit.edu\/eecs\/make-an-appointment\/\">Set up a free coaching appointment<\/a> to receive feedback on a wide range of communication tasks, including:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Grad school or fellowship applications<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Job applications<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For faculty positions, industry jobs, internships, and more!<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Theses and thesis proposals<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Journal or conference papers<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Talks and elevator pitches<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Posters or figures<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Abstracts<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Any other scientific or technical communication task<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As engineers and scientists, the Communication Fellows focus on high-level issues such as motivation, audience, and clarity. They are not intended to be used as line-editors for grammar or English.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> For example, a Fellow can help you:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">understand what your readers expect to see from application documents<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">make your writing more accessible and impressive to your readers<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">improve the clarity of your presentations and posters<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">brainstorm what content to include in a research statement to get your readers excited about your proposal<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">polish a paper before initial submission or at the camera-ready stage<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">design a figure that clearly communicates your main message<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">tailor a talk for the appropriate audience and practice delivering it with confidence<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"field-item even\">\n<h3><strong>The EECS Communication Lab offers targeted workshops<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In addition to 1-on-1 coaching, the Communication Lab hosts workshops on a range of topics related to technical communication. The goal of these targeted workshops is to provide timely, hands-on support, aligned with relevant deadlines. For example, the Comm Lab has previously offered workshops on NSF GRFP applications, MEng thesis proposals, Research Qualifying Exams (RQEs), and faculty job talks.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>We welcome\u00a0collaborations and suggestions<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Communication Fellows and staff partner closely with EECS department leadership, faculty, staff, and student leadership groups. We love to hear input on how we can best support the EECS community in learning important writing, speaking, and visual design skills. We recruit new Communication Fellows once per year with applications typically opening in January or February.
