Joel is a postdoc at MIT and executive director of the Tata-MIT GridEdge Solar research program, focused on scale-up of lightweight and flexible solar cells. He received his PhD in electrical engineering from MIT in 2017 working with Vladimir Bulović on new substrates, device architectures, and performance limits for colloidal quantum dot solar cells. As a grad student, Joel served as Co-President of the EECS Graduate Student Association. Joel grew up in Ohio and studied EE as an undergrad at Stanford before coming to MIT. He is deeply concerned about climate change, interested in the physics and economics of renewable energy, and excited about entrepreneurship and all things solar. Outside the lab, Joel enjoys running along the river and cooking mystery farm-share vegetables.
