Certain types of policy communication are still governed by specific formal customs and styles. Therefore, understanding the expected rules or format that the communication should take can help ensure that your input is properly received and that the communication style isn’t a barrier to your message.
The following articles describe common types of formal policy communication:
- Congressional Hill Meeting (formal in-person meeting)
- Letter of support (formal letter to congressional member or other policy makers)
- Op-ed (formal letter/article in a news publication)
- Public comment on pending regulation (formal on-the-record comment to an executive agency)
These articles were developed in collaboration with Dr. Dan Pomeroy, manager of MIT’s International Policy Lab.
